Capturing Paris’ evening light

Capturing Paris’ evening light

It was still warm on our first Sunday evening in Paris. The perfect evening to explore our neighbourhood a little further. As the sun slowly sunk lower and lower, it created the most beautiful saffron light against Paris’ creamy buildings.  Continue reading Capturing Paris’ evening light

Buying supplies at the Montorgueil Market

Buying supplies at the Montorgueil Market

Today, a Sunday and our first full day in Paris, we spent exploring and buying supplies from local stores in the Montorgueil Market area. It was a great opportunity to use some of the French I’ve been learning at night classes for the past two terms. I think we both did ourselves proud for at least attempting to speak French, and got a good response from most of the busy shop keepers.  Continue reading Buying supplies at the Montorgueil Market

Mingling at the Market tour

Mingling at the Market tour

Parisians are particular about buying local, so you’ll always see on the signs an indication of the produce’s origin. Some things, of course, can’t be grown in France such as bananas, pineapples, and mangoes, but you’ll see on the price signs an indicate of what country they were grown in. Continue reading Mingling at the Market tour

Eiffel Tower, Musee Rodin, and aching feet

Eiffel Tower, Musee Rodin, and aching feet

As we step out onto the 2nd floor, we’re told to turn left to take the cable car directly up to the top. Yeah, nah. That’s not happening for me today. Even the briefest attempt to look up has my head swimming. I grasp the rails and wait for my heart to stop thundering.  Continue reading Eiffel Tower, Musee Rodin, and aching feet

Eating my way through Montmarte

Eating my way through Montmarte

There are lots of boutique clothing, jewellery, and food shops in Montmarte, and I spend a few hours exploring them, buying my family some little things for Christmas. The shopkeepers are very helpful, don’t mind my lack of French, and I’m feeling confident again. Continue reading Eating my way through Montmarte

One cold, contemplative Sunday
Paris

One cold, contemplative Sunday

After the hour-long service I ride a wave of people out into the plaza again, to find it colder, damper, and greyer than before. Ugh. I’m now really kicking myself for not bringing a hat and scarf. Continue reading One cold, contemplative Sunday

All the tiny things
Paris

All the tiny things

So it was with a skip in my stride that I set off on a cool Saturday morning to Gare Saint-Lazare, just a brief stop at Costa’s for a cafe moccha (Mochaccino) and pain au chocolat (chocolate croissant). Continue reading All the tiny things

Antiquities and Impressionists

Antiquities and Impressionists

The jewellery is intricate and beautiful, and includes many tiny gold amulets, amethyst and enamel necklaces, and large stone rings. I was fascinated by the brass mirrors and cosmetic containers. Continue reading Antiquities and Impressionists

Paris welcomes me back with an indecent proposal

Paris welcomes me back with an indecent proposal

By the time we got on the first train he was asking, in that typical French way (with a smile, of course), if I was married. “No, I’m divorced”, I explained. Have a boyfriend? “Nooo”, I laughed. Not interested in men then? he said puzzled. To which I of course blushed… Continue reading Paris welcomes me back with an indecent proposal
